Realist painting is commonly regarded as an art form in retirement and it is often accused of cramping self expression with its restrictive and exacting technique.

In the defence of realism, it is relevant to the portrayal of inner feelings in relation to the outside world. I value it not as a display of skill, but as an effective means of human communication.
