The exacting technique of realist painting is, nowadays, often viewed with suspicion as a potential hindrance to self-expression. In fact it is capable of being a very articulate language, one that can engage the viewer deeply and express complex thoughts and feelings with subtlety and precision.
It does however take an artist time to learn this language and during this time the demand to acquire an effective technique can easily lure an artist away from what he or she was originally trying to say.
I am a self taught amateur artist who is still only part of the way through this testing learning process.
